J. Mark Ash Modern Farmhouse

June 19th, 2009 · No Comments

This home, designed by J. Mark Ash in rural Georgia, won The Honor Award of Excellence (Custom Luxury under 3000 square feet) in 2006.
I especially like the galvanized details throughout the house, especially the pipes supporting the shelves in the kitchen.

Remarkably, the home was built for $90 a square foot.

Chicken Coop Update

June 4th, 2009 · 2 Comments

A few people asked about the progress on the chicken coop and chickens.
Here is an in-progress picture of the coop. I’ve been told many times now that this is WAY more than chickens need, but …

The paint is just primer. I am looking at colors and detailing the steps, lighting and the roof (standing seam metal) to add more interest.

The chickens are doing well. We started with 3, Maisie, Cinnamon and Sea salt. Maisie mysteriously died one morning so we bought 2 new chicks. All are well.

About 20 min. ago, I heard a rooster sound and caught Sea salt crowing. Since we can not have roosters in Lafayette, Sea salt will go to live on a farm nearby.

We expect to begin gathering eggs within a couple of weeks.

Seattle Remodel - Gorgeous

This one, from Remodelista just took my breath away. Grand, bright, subtle, retro, but new. It makes me want to do the kitchen all over again, but this time with 12′ tall ceilings.

My New Favorite Hardware Store

I am looking for interesting table legs for desks at work and I stumbled onto these. Cast iron, manufactured in the style of 1800’s machine shop workbench legs, these are narrow and heavy so they work well for computer desks.

Poke around the Lee Valley Hardware site. They may become your new favorite as well.

Porch Beam Detail

I found these images on the Beard + Riser website.

Beard + Riser is a Greenwood, Mississippi design firm engaged in a wide range of architectural projects in the Mississippi Delta area.

Not a lot of the work presented on their site is Farmhouse Modern, but these two images struck me as particularly appealing. I would like to incorporate the over-sized post and beam detail juxtaposed with the painted and semi-ornate rafter tails into a ranch/farmhouse project.

This looks like a good place to spend slow Summer evenings.

Big Red Farmhouse - Mell Lawrence Architects

May 7th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Maybe it’s the economy, but happy, bright houses are catching my eye. I bookmarked this one, the “Wilde Hare Ranch” by Mell Lawrence Architects a while ago, but it leaped out to me tonight.

The details are tight, but not fussy and the comfortable forms and materials make this a very satisfying house.

There are more photos on the website.

Photography is by Hester + Hardaway Photographers.
